about

Live improvisation, when it goes well, is a chance to participate in the creation of something new. Being present when new music comes into being is more like discovering something than inventing it. It's more "Whoa--look at this cool rock!" than "Stand back and watch my meticulous plan unfold." There are plenty of other times it's more like a hike through terrain you won't remember well later, in which you're just moving between the last destination and the next one. (There are certainly cool rocks along the way, but maybe we didn't notice them or see how cool they were, and passed them by. Or maybe the cool things were plants or squirrels, but we ere looking for rocks. Someone else will have to find them.)

New music did appear in this improvisation, particularly in the longer pieces. Listening back to it now, it's surprising to hear these melodic and harmonic shifts I wouldn't have set out to do. It's good to come back with some cool rocks and share them with you.

This performance is dedicated to the visual art of Hideaki Yamanobe. Thank you for listening!
