about

Anything the performer uses in a performance increases the risk that something will go wrong. This evening, it was a software upgrade. I'd updated Max to the latest version, and the performance suffered from audio interruption in monitoring. After a few minutes, there were increasing dropouts and glitches, and the common remedies didn't help. (Ultimately I restored the previous version from a backup.) During forty minutes of live debugging, however, the audience stayed with me. Their experience was something like an extended version of Cage's 4'33".

I began again. The first two pieces here were from the troubled part, when monitoring was interrupted by glitches, but the recording was unaffected. The remainder are from the second part, when I had to put aside my problem-solving mode to find the music. As such, it's very still, like growing a garden after a damaging storm.

This recording is dedicated to the audience and to the visual art of Kishio Suga. Thank you for listening!
