about

Sunday night, I had the rare opportunity to attend a question-and-answer session given by Robert Fripp and David Singleton. While it's obvious that RF's solo ambient guitar work is a major influence and inspiration for this series, subtleties of that influence are worth pointing out.

There's the practice of the musician continually challenging themselves in live performance. One can build a lush, sonic world with a guitar, fuzz, wah, and volume pedals, one note at a time. Music arrives on its own terms, and we need to be present to listen for it. Music can, given a chance, change the world...by changing the worlds of other musicians and listeners, who can also change their worlds. These are bold thoughts, but the world needs boldness now.

(In a further nod to Sunday's talk, the last piece also follows one of Robert's guidelines: "When you don't know what to do, play an F#!")

This week's improvisations are dedicated to the work of Nobuo Sekine. Thank you for listening!
