Live improvisations for Internet streaming. Many of us are isolating (and isolated) at home, so I'd wanted to improvise some ambient pieces with guitar and a delay network I've been working on in Max/MSP.

My thought in doing the first one was that anything I did with an ambient live stream would be an offering of something calming and still to listeners. There's already quite enough to get us all agitated. There's a lot of live music to hear now over the Internet, though, so I also put up the archives of these performances.

The first three pieces here are based on three different modes of playing the Moog Guitar. While Moog's thought of as a synthesizer company, this guitar (designed by Paul Vo) is dedicated to sustaining strings. (There is a Moog ladder filter in it, but these pieces don't make use of it.) The first two use the threshold/conditional sustain mode and the sustain-everything mode, while the third uses the active-muting mode.

The fourth piece uses the Univox Effie in Fahey C-tuning (well, really B tuning, but the same pitch relations).

This one seems even slower-moving than others, largely from the sustain of the Moog. It lends itself to inhabiting a sound environment for a while, and maintaining a mood, with a very slow development.

Something about the atmospheres of 2 and 4 also reminds me of wandering around North Adams MA, taking in the evening of performances during the 2019 Cycling74 conference, exactly a year ago. Here's to having these kinds of gatherings again.
