about

This music led us slowly and quietly through darkness and light. That's not surprising, given the date. The air is slightly cooler than it's been, with the first sense of autumn arriving. The sky was perfectly clear and the weather mild, but the memories remain heavy.

It's the beginning of saying farewell to summer, and getting ready for what's next. The music this week reflects that light and dark simultaneity, not settling into one or the other, but discovering parts of each.

Just last week, Steve Roden (www.inbetweennoise.com) moved on to the next quiet realm, and I as thinking of his work's sense of restraint and acceptance, how it focuses our attention on what we'd normally miss. Some normally extraneous sounds (pedal presses, a pick or a thumb on a string) are left in, as a tribute to some of that sensibility.

This week's performance is dedicated to the artwork of Milly Ristvedt and to Steve Roden.
