about

Music manifests itself through a multi-part medium: there's the player, the instrument, the immediate environment, and the listener (and their environment). Every part of this chain affects how the listener experiences the music: the listener sitting quietly at home will have a different experience from the listener speeding down an empty two-lane road in an old muscle car, blasting an 8-track tape.

I want to focus, though, on the instrument part of the chain. While players can channel music through many instruments, the nature of the instrument affects what comes through. This week's guitar brings resonances we haven't heard in a while, from its extended tuning, how that affects the strings, and the resonance of the hollow body. This week's music feels strongly emotional, and the whole environment allowed that.

This week's improvisations are dedicated to the visual art of Susan Morris (susanmorris.com). Please take good care of yourself, and thank you for listening!
